How to Move Out of the Residence Halls Without a Charge Once
A Student Has Moved In

Students who wish to move out of the Residence Halls and into a Greek Chapter House must follow proper check out procedures in order to avoid being charged a fee for breaking their Housing Contract.

Moving after Recruitment

Men participating in Men's Informal Recruitment may move out of Temporary Housing and into their Chapter House without a penalty if:

  1. They move into a Chapter House that is approved to house freshmen
  2. They move before September 25
  3. They follow the check out procedure outlined below.

A small number of freshmen women will be allowed to move out of the Residence Halls and into their Chapter Houses after Women's Formal Recruitment if:

  1. The Chapter submits the proper form to the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life at the end of Formal Recruitment
  2. The Chapter House is approved to house freshmen

Moving During the Semester

Fraternities wishing to move men from the Residence Hall into the Chapter House after Sept. 25 or during Spring Semester must:

  1. Be approved to house freshmen
  2. Must submit a letter to the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life explaning how the move into the Chapter House will benefit the student (not the fraternity) and how the move will cause a minimum of disruption to the student's ability to learn.
  3. The man who wants to move must follow the check out procedure outlined below.

Moving at the end of Fall Semester

Men and women can move into a Chapter House during the last two weeks of Fall Semester without a penalty if:

  1. The Chapter House is approved for freshmen housing
  2. Check out procedure outlined below is followed.

Check Out Procedure

  1. The Chapter must submit either the New Member Card (Fraternities) or the Continuous Open Recruitment form (sororities) to the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life
  2. Student applies to terminate their contract online
  3. Student completes the Authorization to Move Out of the Residence Hall form and submits it to the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life. The online termination cannot be approved until this form has been turned in.

If a freshman chapter member waits until immediately before they plan to leave the halls, having taken none of the steps outlined above, they will appear to Housing Services as someone who cannot checkout of the hall due to the Freshmen Live-in Requirement and they will likely be delayed in completing the contract termination process and will probably be charged a contract breakage fee.
