University Approved Housing Status for Residential Chapters
for the 2007-2008 academic year
Since the inception of the Freshman Residency Requirement (originally in the 1960s, with modifications in the late 1970s), WSU has allowed first year students to live in fraternity and sorority houses and has considered chapter houses University Approved Housing (barring sanctions otherwise). Until now, there has not been an “approval” process or guidelines. The time has come for the University to take a more proactive approach in guiding the direction of chapter house facility management and practices. Therefore, Washington State University recently implemented the University Approved Housing Policy (UAPH), beginning in Fall 2006. Read the University Approved Housing policy for evaluation criteria. A chapter may still recruit freshman members, even if they are not approved to house them in the chapter facility.
Freshman Housing can be withdrawn from chapters who are on Tier 3 in terms of grades, as stated in the Fraternal Organization Agreement. (chapter grades can be found here). The ability to house freshmen can also be withdrawn by the Student Conduct Board. Check the Fraternity and Sorority Chapter Conduct Status for additional information. Chapters are required to have at least 80% of their members attend educational programs in the areas of Sexual Assault/Sexual Health Issues, Alcohol/Drug Issues, Hazing, and Diversity Issues and have an academic year to complete this requirement. This reqirement is detailed in the Fraternal Organization Agreement.
Tier status information for the Fall 2007 semester can be found at FOA_compliance_status_current.htm
