When a Student Moves to the Chapter House from a Residence Hall
(applies only to Chapter Houses approved to house freshmen)
Penalty Free Moving Out Policies & Procedures during Fall Semester
Students who break their housing contract following established procedures by September 25 do not incur a contract breakage penalty. Students may also move at the end of the semester without a penalty.
Fraternities and sororities are private corporations, financially separate from the university. When your student moves from a residence hall into a fraternity or sorority chapter house, funds cannot be transferred from the student's university account directly to the chapter account. If there is a balance in the student's financial aid award after tuition and fees are paid, the student may contact Student Accounts in the French Adminstration Building to obtain a check for the remaining funds. This check can be deposited into the student's own checking account and used to pay room and board fees.
When your student lives in the chapter house, they will pay room and board to the fraternity or sorority. Your student must learn from the chapter when, where, and how much to pay. Each chapter is responsible for their finances, and each chapter handles their accounts in their own way. Please have your student contact the chapter treasurer for payment details and schedule.
Penalty Free Moving Out Policies & Procedures during Spring Semester
Students joining a fraternity/sorority and moving from a residence hall into a fraternity or sorority chapter house will have until February 1, 2008, to move without incurring a penalty or having to engage in a lengthy process via the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life (CFSL). These students must follow the established procedures to check out of the residence halls properly.
If residents do not move out correctly and ensure that their paperwork is processed via both Housing and the CFSL they will incur a daily fee until they do follow all check-out procedures. There will be no exceptions. The move out process has been and will continue to be communicated clearly to both students joining chapters, chapter leadership, and chapter advisors.
After February 1, any student wishing to move out of a residence hall must follow the proper check-out procedures with housing and obtain permission from the CFSL. Part of the permission process with the CFSL will be a lengthy process each chapter will have to engage in to prove that the move is beneficial for the student and will not disrupt their learning cycle. The process for move-outs following February 1 will be clearly outlined and marketed to all stakeholders. CFSL staff will be responsible for ensuring that the process is complete and informing housing staff when students are approved to move out. Students that do not follow this process and check out will be subject to the daily fee outlined above.
*There shall be no delineation between freshman students & upperclassman in regards to move-out policies and procedures. A process will be determined in cooperation with the CFSL to ensure that upperclassmen wanting to move out without a penalty are actually moving into/joining a fraternity/sorority.
We hope that your student has a positive experience as a chapter member. If you have questions or concerns, please contact our office. You may also contact chapter advisors. Chapter advisors are alumni that volunteer their time to assist their chapter. Their email addresses are available here:
